The Little Bear's Winter Sleep

The first snow of winter drifted down over the forest. A little bear cub watched the white flakes fall with wide, excited eyes — but his mother said it was time for the whole family to go into the den and sleep through the winter. The cub pouted. He still wanted to run and play in the snow.

Mother bear hugged him close and gently explained that a bear's body must save up its strength and rest for a long, long time to survive the bitter cold ahead. But once everyone had fallen asleep, the impatient little cub quietly crept out of the den to play in the snow alone in the dark.

Outside, the wind howled and the snow fell harder and harder. Before long the cub was shivering, his breath puffing out in white clouds, his paws so cold he could barely move them. He felt more tired and cold than he had ever felt in his life.

The cub rushed back through the snow into the den as fast as his tired legs could carry him. His mother woke to find him soaked and trembling, but she didn't scold him at all. She simply wrapped him in warmth and gently explained once more why his small body truly needed this rest.

That night, the cub curled up against his mother and fell into a deep, understanding sleep for the first time. He slept through the whole winter with his family, until spring finally arrived. He woke up strong and full of joy, finally understanding why patient rest had mattered so much.

Sometimes patience and proper rest are exactly what make us strong enough for the days ahead.
