The Crab Who Wanted to Walk Straight

A bright orange little crab scuttled sideways along the beach every day. Her friends, the fish and the seagulls, always laughed that she walked stranger than anyone, and it made the little crab feel embarrassed every time.

One night, the little crab decided to practice walking straight like the other animals. She tried moving her legs forward in a straight line, but tumbled and rolled clumsily across the sand instead.

Night after night, the little crab practiced without giving up. No matter how often she fell, she always got back up to try again, even when she felt a little discouraged.

One day, a hunting bird swooped down suddenly. Practicing her straight walk, the little crab couldn't move fast enough to escape. Instinctively, she switched back to her sideways scuttle and darted away in a flash.

The little crab realized her sideways walk wasn't a flaw at all, but a special ability that let her dodge danger faster than anyone else. From then on, she scuttled proudly sideways along the beach once more.

Our differences aren't flaws — they might be the very special ability nobody else has.
