The Hermit Crab's New Home

A hermit crab had lived in the same spiral orange shell for as long as it could remember. It loved this home dearly — but lately it had to squeeze and curl tighter each day just to fit inside a shell that kept feeling smaller.

"If I don't find a new home, I won't be safe when danger comes," the crab worried. It looked around the beach, scattered with many empty shells — but felt too scared to leave the warm, familiar home it had always known.

At last the crab gathered its courage and slipped out of its old shell, scurrying across the hot sand with its soft, bare body exposed. It felt more vulnerable than ever before — but hurried to find a new shell as fast as it could.

It tried on shell after shell — one was too big and wobbly, another had a sharp crack. Then it found a striped blue-violet shell that fit just right, roomy enough to move comfortably.

Wearing its new shell, the hermit crab explored the beach with confidence, feeling safer and more comfortable than ever. It had learned that growing up sometimes means being brave enough to change, in order to find what truly fits.

Growing up sometimes means bravely leaving the familiar behind to find what truly fits who we've become.
