The Boy and His First Snowman
⏱ 3–5 min
Today was Fern's first day at her new school. She walked into the classroom with her heart pounding, looking around but not recognizing a single face. Quietly, Fern sat down at an empty desk, feeling small and alone surrounded by a room full of new classmates.
During class, Fern watched her classmates whisper and giggle together like old friends. She looked on quietly, too shy to join in. When lunchtime came, Fern sat alone in a corner of the playground, watching the other kids play and laugh happily from a distance.
Toon, who had been playing nearby with friends, noticed Fern sitting all alone. He walked over with a box of crayons in his hand and asked with a smile, "What's your name? Want to jump rope with us? We've got lots of extra crayons too, if you'd rather draw with us instead."
Fern smiled shyly and nodded yes. She joined Toon and his friends to jump rope, and later they colored pictures together during art time. Fern's laughter grew louder and louder, and little by little, the fear in her heart melted away.
When school ended, Fern walked out together with Toon, chatting excitedly about what they'd play together tomorrow. When she spotted her mom waiting to pick her up, Fern ran over with a huge smile, telling her all about the first new friend she'd made that day — and how, for the first time, she felt like she truly belonged.
Sometimes just one small step — like inviting someone to play — is enough to make a person feel like they belong.
Fern feels scared and lonely on her first day at a new school, until a classmate named Toon bravely comes over to include her, helping Fern warm up and make her very first friend on that same day.
